Highly Specialist Speech & Language Therapist

Join our friendly Speech and Language Therapy team at Whipps Cross University Hospital and play a pivotal role in shaping high-quality acute adult services within Barts Health NHS Trust, one of the largest and most innovative NHS providers in the UK.
About the Role
We are seeking a highly specialist Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist to lead our inpatient team, delivering expert assessment and management of adults with acquired communication and swallowing difficulties. This is an opportunity to develop advanced clinical skills in critical areas such as:
- Tracheostomy management
- Videofluoroscopy (VFS)
- Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)
The role involves working in a supportive, multidisciplinary environment, with strong leadership support, regular supervision from the Clinical Lead SLT, professional development opportunities, and collaboration across the Barts Health network.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Service Development
- Shape and enhance patient care across the acute inpatient pathway.
- Collaborate on service improvement initiatives to ensure high-quality, evidence-based care for adults with complex communication and swallowing disorders.

Clinical Leadership in Instrumental Swallowing Assessment
- Lead and expand the videofluoroscopy clinic and FEES service in partnership with the Band 7 therapist in ICU (Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing).
- Oversee ongoing development of instrumental swallowing assessment services.
- Contribute to weekly tracheostomy board rounds and monthly governance meetings. -Support the Barts Health Tracheostomy Accreditation Programme to promote best practice and service excellence.

Clinical Supervision and Mentorship
- Provide clinical supervision, guidance, and support to junior Speech and Language Therapists.
- Foster a positive learning culture within the SLT service.
- Contribute to the skills development and professional growth of the wider team.

- Multidisciplinary Collaboration
- Work closely with colleagues from critical care, respiratory teams, nursing, and other healthcare professionals to ensure cohesive patient care plans.
- Actively participate in clinical governance and service evaluation initiatives.
