# Speech and Language Therapist (Mainstream Schools) – Full-Time Band 7 Role
About the Role
Do you want to be part of a friendly and supportive senior leadership team (SLT)?
Are you passionate about offering direct therapy to children in mainstream schools?
Do you want to develop your leadership skills while supporting vulnerable children?
We are seeking an experienced Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) to join our Hillingdon mainstream schools team, where you will work closely with pupils, schools, and parents to address speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN).
Key Responsibilities
Direct Therapy & Support in Schools
- Provide a specialist speech and language therapy service to children and young people (CYP) in primary and secondary mainstream schools.
- Offer targeted assessments and tailored therapy packages in allocated schools.
- Train and support school staff and parents to effectively implement therapy advice.
- Contribute to early identification of children with potential speech/language/communication needs.
- Collaborate regularly with SENCOs (Special Educational Needs Coordinators) to align services with school priorities.
Safeguarding & Service Quality
- Always prioritise the safeguarding of vulnerable children.
- Ensure Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are met and maintain target activity levels.
- Lead and contribute to service improvement projects, clinical audits, and working groups.
- Deliver workshops for:
- The wider SLT team
- Parents and school staff on best practice and intervention strategies
- Offer joint consultations with other team members and co-lead service development.
- manage performance of identified team members, including formal and informal support.
- Deputise for the team leader when required, assisting with team management and leadership.

Qualifications & Experience
Essential Criteria
Qualifications
- Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree (minimum 2:2 or equivalent).
- HPC licence to practice (Health and Care Professions Council).
- Registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
Further Qualifications & Training
- Completion of relevant further training courses.
- Attendance at special interest groups or clinical excellence initiatives. (Desirable) First-class honours degree or advanced specialised training relevant to the role.

Experience
- Extensive experience as a therapist in mainstream or special schools.
- Ability to develop and deliver training for staff, parents, and colleagues.
- Leadership in service improvement projects.
- Experience in providing support to junior colleagues (including informal mentoring).
- Supervisor of students.
(Desirable) Experience in formal supervision of less experienced SLTs or appraisals for junior staff.
Skills & Knowledge
Essential Competencies
- In-depth expertise in assessment tools for school-age children with SLCN.
- Knowledge of widely used therapy approaches, including:
- Speech, language, stammering
- Social communication
- Selective mutism
- Experience contributing to clinical audits.
- Strong knowledge of national policies/procedures related to SLCN.
- Understanding of interdisciplinary collaboration with child-related professionals.
Desirable Competencies
- Leadership in large-scale clinical audits.
Other Requirements
Essential
- Strong IT skills for records, reporting, and remote working.
Desirable
- Valid driving licence (mobile working required).
