Skilled Highway Operatives – Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council (BCP)
Salary & Benefits
The pay rate for this role is £28,598 Band 5 (pro rata for part-time colleagues) plus up to £3,197 as a Recruitment & Retention payment, with opportunities to increase income via an ‘Out of Hours’ rota.
Clear career progression is guaranteed within this defined pay band. Success in this role ensures fair and consistent starting pay for all new hires.

Internal candidates are typically appointed at the entry point of the Band 5 pay scale unless moving within the same profession and skill level, in which case appointment may be at their existing pay point.
About the Role
BCP Council’s Highway Delivery Team is seeking Skilled Highway Operatives to maintain, improve, and safeguard the public highway network for residents and visitors across Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole. Key activities include:

Highways Maintenance
- Routine repairs (joint filling, patching)
- Remedial work (crack sealing, drainage repairs)

Highways Construction/Resurfacing
- Small and major scheme support
- Road, footway, and cycle path improvements

Traffic Management
- Deployment in both rural and urban environments
- High-speed network traffic control experience required

Winter Service provision
- Emergency response and maintenance
Key Experience Requirements:
✔ Proven experience in highway maintenance and remedial repairs ✔ Project support in construction/resurfacing schemes ✔ Traffic management skills in fast-moving traffic settings recqquired ✔ Class C1 or Class C driving licence (essential) ✔ Strong ability to remain calm, professional, and polite when interacting with the public
Daily Operations:
Successful applicants will work from our depots in: • Hatch Pond Road Depot, Poole • Southcote Road Depot, Bournemouth
