This role is key to the on-the-ground delivery of Highway improvement projects and highway repairs in local communities in Salford.
We will task you with managing and controlling the construction, repair and refurbishment of new footways and carriageways.
Your combination of technical and people skills can help us make local communities safer and easier to get around you can enjoy daily variety in your work and the chance to grow your construction expertise and your abilities as a supervisor/leader/mentor.

Your role
- Manage and control the construction, repair and refurbishment of new footways and carriageways and associated works.
- Ensure permanent reinstatement to bituminous and modular paved areas.
- Carry out and direct in the taking up, storing, safe handling and laying of pre-cast concrete, kerbing, sett paving, block paving and other paving works and removal of any waste.
- Laying out of the full range of bituminous macadam binder course and surface course.
- Install a variety of street furniture, guard rails, bollards, sign poles, public seating and litter bins and ironwork.
- Undertake and lead on the setting out of Civil Engineering Works.
- Act as mentor/chaperone to develop Highways Maintenance Trainees/Apprentices.
- Order materials and complete paperwork, i.e. time sheet, plant and equipment sheets.
- Work around practical problems and unexpected challenges using your initiative to fix problems and get the job done.
Your profile
- Proven practical/technical skills and with a track record of delivering the intended goals/outcomes successfully.
- Competent in the operation of all associated tools, plant and equipment with construction accreditations.
- Able to interpret plans and engineering instructions/information.
- Experience of working with the public whilst on official duties.
- Willingness and ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- A desire to gain new skills.
- Previous experience of working to deadlines.
- A sense of pride in being a visible representative of the council working to improve the local community.
- A full UK driving licence. If you can already drive an HGV that’s a massive plus, and we also have training opportunities for interested, capable drivers.
