Senior Highways Design Engineer

Salary: £45,000 to £53,000

An established engineering consultancy is looking to recruit an experienced Senior Highways Design Engineer to join its growing team.

With multiple offices across the UK and a strong reputation for delivering transport planning, highways design, drainage, and infrastructure solutions, the business works with a wide range of public and private sector clients on high profile development projects nationwide.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced highways professional looking to take on a senior technical role within a collaborative and supportive environment that values innovation, professional development, and career progression.

The Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the delivery of highway design projects, ensuring work is completed on time, within budget, and to the highest technical standards. They will also play a key role in mentoring junior engineers, managing project resources, and supporting multidisciplinary project delivery across the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver highway design projects within programme and budget.
  • Manage team resources and prioritise workloads effectively.
  • Support projects across multiple offices and engineering disciplines.
  • Produce, review, and approve highway designs and technical reports.
  • Ensure designs comply with DMRB, MCHW, local authority standards, and relevant legislation.
  • Liaise with local authorities and statutory bodies throughout project delivery.
  • Promote innovation and continuous improvement within the team.
  • Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations and Health & Safety requirements.
  • Mentor and develop junior members of the highways design team.

  • Minimum six years' experience in Highways Design.
  • Experience delivering Section 278 and Section 38 highway design schemes.
  • Strong project management experience, delivering projects to programme and budget.
  • Experience managing and mentoring engineering teams.
  • Excellent technical knowledge of DMRB and other relevant highway design standards.
  • Experience producing highway contract documentation.
  • Highway drainage design experience, including Causeway Flow PDS.
  • Ability to advise clients on technical highway engineering matters.
  • Working knowledge of Civil 3D.

Desirable

  • Experience preparing cost estimates.
  • Membership of a relevant Chartered Institution.
  • Valid UK driving licence.
  • Experience using MicroDrainage software.
