Highways Engineer – 6 Month Contract (Potentially Longer) – York

Our client is seeking an experienced Highways Engineer for a contract role spanning 6 months or longer, with the possibility of extension. The position is based in York and will involve supporting various projects across the Yorkshire area, working closely with site engineers, inspectors, supervisors, and project managers to deliver transport schemes effectively.

About the Role

This key role requires supporting our client in the design, development, and delivery of multiple transport schemes, including:

  • Road safety improvements (e.g., safer routes to schools, accident clusters, and danger reduction measures)
  • Active travel schemes (pedestrian and cycle infrastructure)

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting feasibility studies and detailed designs for low-traffin road safety schemes and active travel interventions
  • On-site reviews, identifying key issues and proposing multiple design options based on current highway design standards (e.g., LG cm)
  • Developing preliminary cost estimates aligned with standardised methodologies
  • Supporting public consultation processes and ensuring approved designs are transformed into implementable schemes
  • Collaborating with senior design leads, inspector, supervisors, and project managers to ensure timely and high-quality outcomes

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
