Highways Engineer
Highways Engineer – 6 Month Contract (Potentially Longer) – York
Our client is seeking an experienced Highways Engineer for a contract role spanning 6 months or longer, with the possibility of extension. The position is based in York and will involve supporting various projects across the Yorkshire area, working closely with site engineers, inspectors, supervisors, and project managers to deliver transport schemes effectively.
About the Role
This key role requires supporting our client in the design, development, and delivery of multiple transport schemes, including:
- Road safety improvements (e.g., safer routes to schools, accident clusters, and danger reduction measures)
- Active travel schemes (pedestrian and cycle infrastructure)
Key responsibilities will include:
- Conducting feasibility studies and detailed designs for low-traffin road safety schemes and active travel interventions
- On-site reviews, identifying key issues and proposing multiple design options based on current highway design standards (e.g., LG cm)
- Developing preliminary cost estimates aligned with standardised methodologies
- Supporting public consultation processes and ensuring approved designs are transformed into implementable schemes
- Collaborating with senior design leads, inspector, supervisors, and project managers to ensure timely and high-quality outcomes

The role is full-time with a hybrid model, requiring approximately two days per week based in York (some on-site visits expected).
Contract rate: £22.21 per hour
Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Produce feasibility studies and design evaluations for road safety and active travel initiatives
- Coordinate with project teams to gather data, assess risks, and define scope
- Develop multiple design alternatives with corresponding cost benefits analysis
- Collaborate on detailed design and ensure adherence to highway standards (e.g., MOMHW)
- Assist in public and stakeholder engagement, particularly around new safety and cycling schemes
- Support implementation by ensuring transparent communication between design and on-site teams
Requirements
Candidates should have:
- A strong understanding of highway design principles, standards (e.g., LG cm, DfT guidance), and contract/tendering procedures
- Commercial awareness in Method of Measurement for Highway Works and cost estimating methodologies
- Prior experience in:
- Design, implementation, or maintenance of highways/road schemes
- Cycleway, footway, or shared-space engineering (advantageous)
- CDM Regulations and agreed compliance requirements
- Site supervision, project coordination, or team leadership (desirable)
- Local authority experience (advantageous, but not mandatory)
- Proficiency in CAD/AutoCAD, with experience generating construction deliverables (plans, cross-sections, specifications)
