Highways Inspector

A permanent Highways Inspector opportunity is available to join our NMC SW account in Polmadie, Glasgow, in partnership with Transport Scotland South West.

About the Role

Our NMC South West team is responsible for:

  • Conducting inspections
  • Cyclical maintenance
  • Asset management
  • Scheme delivery
  • Winter maintenance
  • Incident response

As the first point of contact for road users and highway assets, the team supports 600km+ of roads and 1,650 structures, ensuring reliable journey times and high customer service for users.

The Highways Inspector role focuses on collecting safety and improvement data to safeguard road users, clients, and Amey, while ensuring infrastructure remains efficient, safe, and timely.

Hours & Flexibility

  • Standard hours: 40 per week (Monday–Friday)
  • Hybrid, part-time, and flexible working options available

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections in accordance with the Well-Maintained Highways Code of General Practice
  • Collect highways inventory data and manage a GIS database
  • Ensure contract compliance on data quality management
  • Produce timely, accurate reports and assist in project administration as required
  • Comply with health and safety legislation
  • Support the development of inspection and investigation programs

Requirements

Essential:

  • Self-motivated to work autonomously, prioritise workloads, and handle pressure
  • Excellent stakeholder communication skills at all levels
  • Strong project management knowledge (including Microsoft Office proficiency)
  • Full UK driving licence (essential for fieldwork)

Preferred:

  • Qualifications in highways inspection courses (e.g., defect identification, Personal Highway Safety (PHS) certification)
  • Experience with GIS-based systems (e.g., Q-GIS, Arc-GIS)
  • Formal memberships in professional highway organisations (client-defined)
