The Role: Highways Lighting Operative

Base Location: Pontypool Salary: £25,948–£27,011 (per annum plus benefits) + £25k+ extra in earnings via overtime Contract Type: Fixed-term until April 2027 Working Pattern: Mon–Fri, 7:00am–3:00pm (+ overtime opportunities)

Our team manages over 1 million street lights across the UK and Ireland. As a Highways Lighting Operative, you’ll contribute to this mission by ensuring public safety, energy efficiency, and compliant, high-quality infrastructure work.


What You’ll Do

Your role will involve both electrical and highway maintenance, demanding attention to safety, precision, and attention to detail. Typical day-to-day tasks include:

  • Installing, inspecting, and maintaining street lighting systems, including lights, signs, and signposts
  • Excavating and road reinstatement work in line with highway regulations
  • Safely and professionally operating a mobile elevated working platform (MEWP/HIAB)
  • Fault-finding, diagnosing issues, and repairing electrical components
  • Performing preventative maintenance to prevent system failures
  • Strict adherence to safety protocols and regulations (e.g., electrical standards, working at height requirements)
  • Delivering outstanding customer service to ensure satisfied clients and the public

What We’re Looking For

Essential

✅ Reliability and commitment—we need someone who prioritises safety and meets deadlines ✅ Outdoor working stamina—this role requires tough weather conditions and possibility of working outdoors year-round ✅ Experience relevant to highways, infrastructure, or public lighting (optional, but preferred) ✅ Comfort with working at height—expected to use MEWPs daily. IPAF/PASMA certification is a strong plus (but see ‘Nice-to-Haves’ below) ✅ Valid UK driving licence—travel across sites is required

Nice-to-Have (but not always required!)

We’d greatly value if you also have: 🔹 IPAF/PASMA certificates (hydraulic prone access equipment or mobile access) 🔹 Basic knowledge of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations 🔹 G39 Public Lighting Safety & Installation training 🔹 HGV Class 2 licence (We’re hiring talent, not just ticking a checklist!)
