Highways Maintenance Operative

NMC SW Account, Stranraer | Full-time permanent position

We are recruiting for a Highways Maintenance Operative to join our NMC SW account in Stranraer, working in partnership with Transport Scotland Southwest since August 2020. This essential role involves inspections, cyclical maintenance, asset management, scheme delivery, winter maintenance, and incident response. The team is responsible for maintaining over 600 kilometres of road and 1,650 structures to ensure reliable journey times and high-quality customer care.


About the Role

This full-time permanent position (39 hours per week) aims to maintain safe, well-functioning roads throughout all weather conditions and traffic incidents—minimising disruption, keeping people moving, and supporting thriving communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct routine and cyclic maintenance activities, including:
    • Carriageway and footway patching
    • Kerbing
    • Ironwork replacement
    • Drainage maintenance
  • Operate and maintain vehicles (HGVs and small plant machinery), ensuring thorough checks and routine upkeep
  • Participate in winter and summer standby duties, including urgent emergency callouts
  • Uphold safety protocols as a priority for all team members
  • Maintain accurate records, complete all necessary paperwork, and liaise effectively with:
    • Amey employees
    • Sub-contractors
    • Emergency services
    • Police
    • Clients
    • Customers

Requirements

Essential:

  • Full UK driving licence (HGV licence is preferred but not essential)
  • Experience in roads and/or street works
  • Strong awareness of Health and Safety regulations, with a commitment to compliance
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work collaboratively within a team
  • Ability to work occasional Nightshift as required

Desirable:

  • Previous winter maintenance experience in a similar role
  • Existing HGV licence (adventageous)
