We have a fantastic opportunity for a Permanent Highways Maintenance Operative to join our Area 12 Strategic Highways account, based at our West Cowick Compound.

A Highways Maintenance Operative plays a vital role in delivering essential services across the strategic road network. You will support the installation of temporary traffic management and undertake all aspects of highway maintenance, ensuring the network remains safe, efficient, and operational for road users.

This role includes routine and cyclic maintenance activities, minor civils works, litter picking, and participation in winter service and emergency response.

The Role

The standard hours of work are an average of 42 hours per week, based on a 4 on / 4 off shift pattern, working 12-hour day and night shifts on a rotating basis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver highway maintenance works to a high technical standard
  • Attend project and operational briefings as required
  • Operate and drive vehicles and plant (including daily checks, basic maintenance, and cleaning)
  • Carry out routine and cyclic maintenance activities, minor civils works, and general upkeep
  • Assist with temporary traffic management operations
  • Deliver winter maintenance activities (e.g. gritting and snow clearance)
  • Participate in emergency call-out and standby duties
  • Ensure personal and team safety, complying with health and safety legislation and protecting the public
  • Complete pre-shift vehicle checks and maintain defect records
  • Accurately record driver hours and resource utilisation
  • Maintain clear and accurate records, completing all required documentation
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, subcontractors, emergency services, clients, and the public

What We Are Looking For

We Want To Hear From You If You Have

  • LGV Class C licence
  • Valid Driver CPC (35 hours)
  • Appropriate CSCS Card
  • Personal Highways Safety Passport (or willingness to obtain)
  • Manual Handling training
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • A proactive and self-motivated approach
  • Excellent communication skills
