Highways Maintenance Operative
As a Highways Maintenance Operative, your role will be to carry out all aspects of highway maintenance across the Area 14 Network under the National Highways Maintenance & Response Contract. This covers the area from A1(M)/A168 junction near Ripon in the south, to Berwick upon Tweed in the north, and to Barnard Castle on the A66 and Haltwhistle on the A69 in the west, extending to the coast in the east.
You will be part of a team of 14 operatives and a wider team of approximately 60 persons delivering these essential services to the road network across the North East.
Responsibilities
Your main job role responsibilities will be to:
- To work safely, observing all protocols and requirements to assure your safety, that of your team and the road users at all times.
- Be flexible and versatile conducting or supporting the delivery of various maintenance works across the motorway and trunk roads of the North East, such as but not limited to:
- Small drainage repairs, safety fence repairs, kerb and flag laying.
- Grass cutting, gully emptying and routine tidying of depots.
- Minor surfacing
- Post and sign replacements.
- Winter maintenance, as required during the Winter Maintenance period.
- Maintenance and Response Team duties as and when required.
- Small element of traffic management where competencies and training permit.
- To update and complete all works electronically as required and on specified systems of work.
- Drive a range of vehicles in support of the delivery of the scope of works, often for long distances or durations as required.
- Available to work on a shift or rota pattern as required that will include night time and weekend working to assure essential services are maintained. This includes an on-call requirement.
- A team player with good communication skills and a positive attitude.

Knowledge, Skills, And Experience
Competencies/ Attributes
- Essential: Team player, good communication skills and confident speaking to the public and wider team, ability to work at nights, weekends and unsociable hours as required with an on-call requirement.
Experience
- Working on a high-speed road network is desirable, but not essential.
- Skills or experience of undertaking a range of minor works, landscaping works and maintenance activities desirable but not essential.
Qualifications
- Essential: CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card.
- Desirable: Class 2 HGV License; First Aid at Work.
