Your role

Responsibilities

Your initial tasks and duties will depend on your existing skillset. Over time, you can expect to gain new skills and work across a wider range of tasks. Typical responsibilities of our Highways Operatives include:

  • The taking up, disposal, storing, safe handling and laying of flagging, kerbing, and other modular paving works.
  • The safe breaking out, excavation and removal of highway materials.
  • The laying and raking of bituminous macadam binder course and surface course.
  • Setting out of roadworks and associated traffic management.
  • The installation of a variety of street furniture, guard rails, sign poles, and ironwork.
  • Working around practical problems and unexpected challenges using your initiative to fix problems and get the job done.

Your profile

  • Previous experience of manual work and using plant equipment/machinery.
  • Proven practical/technical skills and with a track record of delivering the intended work successfully.
  • Previous experience of working to deadlines.
  • Willingness and ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • A desire to gain new construction skills.
  • A sense of pride in being a visible representative of the council working to improve the local community.
  • A full UK driving licence.

If you can already drive an HGV and construction accreditations that’s a massive plus, and we also have training opportunities for interested, capable drivers.
