We are recruiting 2 Highway Quantity Surveyor Apprentices to join our Highways Service, starting in September 2026.
This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting highway construction and maintenance schemes while studying towards a Construction Quantity Surveyor (Degree) Apprenticeship (Level 6).
You will join a forward-thinking Highways Service managing significant capital and maintenance projects across Derbyshire, with a focus on value for money, commercial governance, and sustainable service delivery.

What You’ll Be Doing
As a Highway Quantity Surveyor Apprentice, you will work alongside experienced Quantity Surveyors and contract management professionals, supporting:

- Cost planning, estimating, and financial management of highway schemes
- Contract administration (including NEC contracts)
- Tender evaluation and procurement support
- Variations, valuations, and compensation event assessments
- Contractor performance monitoring and value-for-money evaluations
- Accurate commercial records and audit trail maintenance
- Risk management and commercial decision-making
- Site visits and health & safety awareness development
You will also contribute to service improvements, gaining insights into commercial management’s role in effective project delivery.
Learning & Development
Your apprenticeship includes:
- A Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship (Construction Quantity Surveyor) through an approved provider, combining:
- Structured academic learning (lectures, seminars, tutorials, site visits, industry visits)
- Assessment via workshops, fieldwork, group assignments, and exams
- On-the-job experience working live Highways projects
- Supported development of professional knowledge, skills, and behaviours
Progressive responsibility will be given as your skills grow.

Essential Requirements:
✔ Eligible for a Level 6 Quantity Surveying Degree Apprenticeship (e.g. A-levels or equivalent) ✔ Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills ✔ Ability to work effectively in a team and respond positively to feedback ✔ Clear communication skills and relationship-building ability ✔ Commitment to learning and professional development
