Highways Training Officer

Are you passionate about developing people and ensuring compliance across a complex operational service? We are looking for a highly motivated, adaptable Highways Training Officer to join our Highways Training Centre team. This role is integral to supporting Derbyshire County Council’s Highways Operations Service by delivering professional, high-quality Street Works and Highways training programmes.
You will deliver training across various Derbyshire sites as required. You will contribute to the development and delivery of high-quality, engaging, industry-aligned course content and support trainees in achieving nationally recognised qualifications to a very high standard. Your expertise will directly enhance operational capability across the organisation.
About the Role
- Deliver professional and high-quality training in collaboration with and directed by the Highways Training Compliance and Coordination Lead, aligned with the training plan.
- Deputise for the Highways Training Compliance and Coordination Lead as and when required.
- Support the Lead in managing training records and related duties, ensuring high-quality, accurate, and up-to-date records.
- Participate in in-house and external audits to maintain compliance.
- Plan and prepare appropriate courses, teaching materials, and request plant hire.
- Teach high-quality practical and theory-based Street Works and Highways sessions.
- Ensure all training is delivered to a very high standard and remains compliant with current legislation, aligned with Derbyshire Highways service aims.
- Conduct high-quality assessments of practical and theoretical coursework, submitting results to the relevant accreditation body as required.
- Maintain the classroom environment, fostering a professional and engaging learning environment.
- Stay updated on new initiatives relevant to highways operations, ensuring your qualifications remain current and valid.
- Hold accountability for the high standard and quality of your own training provision.
- Manage Health & Safety by promptly reporting issues and ensuring appropriate risk assessments for all practical activities.
- Ensure correct use and care of equipment and report faulty equipment promptly.
- Manage resources effectively, ensuring value for money is maintained.

Person Specification
Finishing the Following Qualifications:
- Chapter 8 Traffic Management qualifications required
- CAT & Genny certification, with experience in working safely to avoid underground cables
- Traffic Management Signage & Traffic Light Setup
- Experience in excavating roads or pavements and surface reinstatement
- Experience in internal/external audits and regulatory inspections
Previous Experience & Skills:
- A practical background in highways, utilities or street works
- Training and assessment experience (highly desirable)
- Experience within a highways or engineering service environment
- Occupational competence and sector-specific expertise

Desirable Soft Skills:
- Able to work flexibly, be well-organised, and manage workloads under strict deadlines.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to **work well with learners and colleagues'.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications would be beneficial.
Essential Language:
- Fluent English required for clear communication with learners, clients, and members of the public.
