Histology Technical Lead Biomedical Scientist

Medical Scientist – Histopathology Section Lead

About the Role

This is a fixed-term post for a 12-month period based at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.

We are seeking a conscientious, forward-thinking individual with excellent leadership, teamwork, and communication skills to lead the histopathology section of the Pathology Department. The role involves:

  • Providing expert clinical advice in cellular pathology
  • Representing the laboratory at an organisational level as required
  • Supporting the Clinical Laboratory Manager in the development of histopathology services
  • Ensuring clinical governance, risk management, and audit standards are maintained

The department handles an annual workload of ~50,000 surgical pathology specimens, performing 180,000 procedures in a teaching hospital environment. It holds UKAS accreditation (No. 8682) and IBMS Training Approval Status for pre- and post-registration training.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the histopathology section with forward-thinking problem-solving and clinical oversight
  • Deliver specialist advice on cellular pathology, histology, and immunocytochemistry
  • Collaborate with training teams (given IBMS approval status)
  • Ensure high standards of service delivery, compliance, and continuous improvement
  • Represent the laboratory at clinical and organisational meetings as needed

Requirements

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • IBMS Accredited Honours Degree in Biomedical Science
  • HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist
  • IBMS Post-Registration Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology (or equivalent)
  • IBMS Accredited MSc in Biomedical Science (or equivalent)
  • Proven leadership experience in a cellular pathology or laboratory environment
  • Strong management and teamwork skills (relevant qualification desirable)
  • Up-to-date Continuing Professional Development (CPD) records
  • Demonstrable knowledge of clinical governance, risk management, and audit protocols
