About the Role

The Avon and Somerset Police History and Heritage Working Group is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join their team.

These roles involve various aspects of preserving and sharing our regional policing heritage. Volunteers may choose to focus on tasks they feel comfortable with, including:


Key Responsibilities

  • Archive Management

    • Assisting with the storage, cleaning, and labelling of items, including:
      • Uniforms
      • Photographs
      • Documents
      • Equipment (including personal safety gear)
  • Museum Support

    • Arranging and rotating uniform and artefact displays in the force museum
    • Creating and updating signage and information sheets as needed

  • Public Engagement & Presentations

    • Delivering talks or presentations to internal and external stakeholders (including members of the public)
    • Engaging positively with enquiries and requests related to history and heritage
  • Digital Archive Maintenance

    • Managing the History and Heritage electronic archive, including:
      • Adding new entries
      • Performing regular backups
      • Improving data quality
      • Sharing content where appropriate
  • Document Preservation

    • Scanning or transcribing hard-copy documents for future preservation
  • Enquiry Management

    • Monitoring the group’s mailbox and responding to internal and external enquiries in a professional manner
  • Donation Coordination

    • Arranging the collection of donations (using ASC resources)
  • Meeting Participation

    • Attending and contributing to meetings of the H&H Group, either electronically or in person

Requirements & Skills

Volunteers will ideally possess some of the following:

  • Computer literacy, including familiarity with Outlook (training will be provided on the force archive system)
  • Attention to detail when handling and organising archives
  • The ability to collate and present information for various audiences
  • Good presentation skills for engaging with stakeholders
  • A passion for preserving and sharing the history of policing

Eligibility & Vetting

All applicants will undergo the Force Vetting Policy and be required to complete and maintain the appropriate level of safeguarding training.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. As part of this role, you must undergo an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, with refreshers required every three years.

Interviews will be held w/c 27th July.
