Specialist Higher Level Teaching Assistant (2 x Fixed-Term Posts)
About the Role
🔹 Salary: £32,061 - £36,363 🔹 Hours: 32.5 per week 🔹 Type: Permanent (Part-time, temporary for 2 years) 🔹 Location: Lancashire, United Kingdom 🔹 Commencement: September 2026
The Specialist Teaching Service is a specialist peripatetic service supporting the Local Authority in Lancashire, working with families, settings, and schools to address the needs of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The team consists of:
- Specialist Teachers
- Specialist Higher Level Teaching Assistants
- Deaf Role Models
- Sensory Technicians
The service provides support from birth through Portage and Early Years Sensory Support, assisting the youngest children with SEND in various settings, including home, early years, schools, and colleges.
Core Responsibilities
The Specialist Higher Level Teaching Assistant role includes:
- Delivering the Portage offer, providing advice, guidance, and support to:
- Parents, carers, and families to help them understand their child’s special educational needs/disability (SEND) and how best to support their development and learning at home and in the community.
- Early Years practitioners to enable them to meet the needs of young children with known SEND, including transition support before school entry.
- Assessing children’s development and learning in alignment with the Early Years Foundation Stage, identifying needs, outcomes, and provision while contributing to the statutory Education, Health and Care Needs Assessment (EHCNA) process.
- Liaising with parents, carers, practitioners, and other professionals to ensure coordinated support.
- Managing an effective caseload while maintaining high standards of professionalism.
- Utilising IT effectively for both service delivery and administrative tasks.

Requirements
We are seeking enthusiastic, highly motivated Higher Level Teaching Assistants with the following attributes:

- Commitment to SEND and inclusion, with a vision for positive change.
- Strong knowledge and passion for Early Years education (from birth to four years).
- Proven experience in supporting children with diverse special educational needs, ensuring their high-quality educational experiences meet their individual requirements.
- Ability to model effective teaching approaches to parents, carers, and early years practitioners, helping to raise standards for children with SEND.
- Collaborative skills, enabling you to work with:
- Children receiving SEND support (or those with EHCPs)
- Their families
- Various settings
- Capacity to provide support and challenge to settings, ensuring clear actions, accountability, and progress evaluation.
- Commitment to improving outcomes for all children and young people.
