About the Role
The Horticultural Sub Editor ensures all sub-editing and horticultural factchecking aligns with Gardeners’ World (GW) brand standards across platforms: print, web, social media, podcasts, video, and beyond.
Reporting to the Head of Multimedia Operations, you will collaborate with platform leads and colleagues across editorial, content creation, and brands to uphold horticultural and general accuracies – preparing content for publication while aligning with platform-specific audience needs.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Sub-editing editorial content across all media, ensuring:
- Accuracy for the home gardener, using correct botanical & common plant names in line with contemporary conventions
- Grammatical, factual and legal correctness
- Consistency with GW’s house style and tone of voice
- Platform-readiness, including optimising for web, metadata, compliance with accessibility standards (e.g. alt text)

Sub-editing marketing/commercial content with the same reliability

Horticultural accuracy verification for audio-visual content

Assisting with horticultural queries or assisting in maintaining/developing GW’s lexicon

Adhering to deadlines while championing high-quality sub-editing for the brand

Complying with BBC Editorial Guidelines and BBC Magazines Commercial Guidelines
Requirements
We require:
- A horticultural qualification or relevant experience/expertise
- Proven experience in cross-platform sub-editing
- Including DTP software (especially Adobe Indesign) for print
- Working knowledge of CMS platforms (budget management and website maintenance)
- Experience with workflow tools (e.g. Monday.com)
- Attention to detail paired with ability to handle deadlines
- Familiarity with legal implications in media and defamation laws
