Youth Worker – Emergency Department (Interpersonal Violence & Exploitation Support)
About the Role
Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced and motivated Youth Worker to join their Emergency Department team, specialising in supporting young people (aged 11–25) who have experienced interpersonal violence or exploitation-related harm.
This role will focus on delivering trauma-informed, culturally competent interventions, including rapid engagement, safety planning, and connection to community services. The post holder will work across the Emergency Department and inpatient wards to reduce repeat attendances and improve long-term outcomes for vulnerable young people.

Key Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Provide specialist engagement and case management for young people presenting to the ED due to interpersonal violence.
- Deliver trauma-informed interventions and safety planning to support immediate recovery.
- Work with hospital wards, youth services, mental health, substance use, and violence reduction programmes to ensure ongoing support.
- Conduct follow-up contact post-discharge to monitor recovery and service engagement.
- Collaborate with clinical/safeguarding teams to manage risks and uphold patient welfare.
- Train ED and hospital staff on recognising and responding to youth violence and exploitation.
- record-keeping, data monitoring, and audit participation to refine service improvements.

Person Specification
Education
Essential:
- Degree or equivalent experience in youth work, social care, psychology, criminology, or related fields.
- Safeguarding Children & Young People (Level 3) training (or willingness to undertake).
Desirable:
- Formal training in trauma-informed practice, motivational interviewing, restorative practice, or de-escalation techniques.
Work Experience
Essential:
- Substantial experience in youth work, youth justice, or community work within Bristol.
- Hands-on experience working with young people (11–25) exposed to violence, trauma, or complex needs.
Desirable:
- Previous experience in acute hospital settings.
Key Knowledge
Essential:
- Deep understanding of serious youth violence, exploitation, and contextual safeguarding.
- Knowledge of trauma/ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and their impact.
- Proficiency in safeguarding legislation, thresholds, and escalation processes.
- Familiarity with Bristol’s youth violence landscape and local services.
- Experience engaging young people in crisis or high-risk situations.
