Housekeeper in Social Care

As a housekeeper in social care you can work in a number of settings including a nursing home, care home or supported living. In your role you will keep the care setting clean and safe. You will be expected to make sure the environment is welcoming and comfortable. Making beds and doing laundry, keeping records of housekeeping stocks and ordering supplies and general upkeep of communal areas and bedrooms.

Expected to earn

The starting pay is around £10.70 and can increase to £11.30.

Entry requirements

It may help to have some knowledge of health and safety in the workplace and of the issues faced by people who need care and support. Relevant experience is not essential as full training is provided; having the right values is key. If you are caring and compassionate with good communication skills, a housekeeper could be for you. Many people bring their own personal experience of caring, as well as transferable skills and life experience. There are a range of free training courses to support you into employment and to progress your career in care.

Opportunities to develop

Develop to head / team leader housekeeper. Your employer will provide an induction including training necessary for your role such as health and safety, fire safety and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) training. You might also receive specific social care training such as autism awareness, communication skills or working with people with dementia.
