Job Overview
An opportunity has arisen to recruit a Housekeeper to support the Emergency Department at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
We are seeking an enthusiastic, reliable, and hardworking Housekeeper who will play an integral role in maintaining a clean, safe, and comfortable environment at all times.
The role demands excellent communication and organisational skills, the ability to work without direct supervision, and the capability to prioritise workloads flexibly in response to the demands of a highly dynamic environment. Strong interpersonal skills are essential, as you will engage with patients throughout the day and communicate effectively with all levels of staff, both in person and over the telephone.
You will be responsible for managing stock levels, including ordering materials, and ensuring a high standard of cleanliness across the department.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure fragrance-free, infection-control compliant cleaning procedures in high-traffic areas, including patient wards, consult rooms, and public waiting spaces.
- Maintain inventory controls for cleaning materials, bed linen, and medical supplies. Order new stock as needed to prevent shortages.
- Adhere to health and safety protocols, including proper handling of disinfectants and chemicals to avoid contamination.
- Assist in maintaining a sterile work environment, ensuring correct disposal of sharps, hazardous waste, and medical equipment.
- Collaborate with the departmental team, ensuring seamless workflow and clear communication between all service levels.
- Work independently but with initiative, identifying priorities in dynamic settings (e.g. rapid-turnover emergency scenarios).
- Perform equipment maintenance for staff-use tools as required, ensuring reliable operation at all times.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
