Housing Officer (Casework & Prevention)

Housing Advisor – Prevention of Homelessness

Position reference: 50124620

Location & Details

  • Directorate: Public Health and Communities | Service: Resilient Communities
  • Salary: £35,412 – £38,220 per annum
  • Hours per week: 37 (Flexible working arrangements accommodated)
  • Contract type: Permanent

About the Role

We are seeking a passionate Housing Advisor to join the Housing Options Team, focused on preventing homelessness in the Barnsley borough. In this role, you’ll provide frontline support, deliver statutory housing duties, and collaborate with partners to develop housing solutions.

Core Responsibilities

  • Deliver a comprehensive housing options service, in line with Part VII Housing Act 1996 and Homelessness Reduction Act 2017.
  • Conduct assessments, create personalised housing plans, and deliver housing advice to households at risk of homelessness.
  • Prevent homelessness, helping clients retain their homes or secure alternative accommodation.
  • Work proactively to include a trauma-informed, strengths-based approach in supporting sustainability and avoiding repeat incidents.
  • Coordinate with internal services (e.g. social work, family services) and external agencies to enable long-term prevention.
  • Act as a caseworker and advocate, ensuring service users receive timely and relevant support.

Location & Travel

Office: Barnsley town centre (main base), with sessions potentially requiring attendance in other locations or home visits.


Person Specification

Must-Have Qualifications & Experience

  • Essential qualification/experience: Level 4 qualification (e.g. in housing, social work, advice training) or equivalent.
  • Casework & advocacy: Prior experience in managing client-facing cases and supporting vulnerable households.
  • Engagement skills: Ability to collaborate effectively with multi-agency partners, delivering prevention-focused and commissioned housing support.

Personal Attributes

  • Compassion & resilience: Motivated by making a difference in people’s lives through housing support.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: Natural communicator in both written and verbal contexts.
  • Knowledge of homelessness: Working understanding of Homelessness Prevention Plans, housing law, and current policies.
  • Flexibility & adaptability: Willingness to work across a varied caseload, under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • Training & compliance: Willingness to receive additional training and engage in statutory requirements.
