When you move to Australia as a student or whatever visa you hold, before starting any work or getting any pay job you must set up an Australia tax number file known as TFN via the Australia taxation office or a local post office before even creating your bank account later. This should be the very first thing to do as soon as you arrive in Australia. It is compulsory, without these documents, you can't even get a job in Australia. This is because every employer will ask for them. It is free to get this TFN online and even straightforward and easy. There are also many agencies online that will require about 60$ Australia dollars to help you process this. Save your money!!! On a previous post I gave a straightforward and easy step by step guide to get your TFN online directly via the Australia Taxation office website, follow the guide and save some money. I also provided a list of documents or list of certificates you must get in order to get any job in Australia, how much it costs and how you get them.

When you apply for the TFN, and if successful, they will send you a tax number after about 28 days. It is the number that you will provide to your employer once you get a job offer. To provide this number to your employer, you must submit what is called a Tax File Number Declaration Form.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

You are considered to be an Australian resident for tax purposes if you:

  • You have been living in Australia already, or have just come to Australia and you will be living there permanently

Or you are an international student, and you will be doing a course that lasts more than six months.

But if you are on a working holiday, there is a different tax rate that applies to you, so place an X in the working holiday marker box on the form.

General Reference

  • Question 9. Do you want to claim the tax-free threshold from this payer?

This is the amount of income or payment that you can earn each financial year without being taxed. Generally, you only claim the tax-free threshold only once. If you have claimed it before in your previous job, you can't claim it a second time. Those on a working holiday visa have to answer No. This does not currently apply to them. As already mentioned above, they have a different tax rate that applies to them.

  • Question 10. This should be No as it only applies to Australian Nationals or those who own school loans and debts to the government.
