HR Advisor (Schools)

HR Advisor – Schools

Band D | £32,348 – £37,662 per annum (37 hrs/week)

Job Summary

As an HR Advisor, you will provide strategic HR support to schools and academies across Herefordshire, offering practical advice, handling complex employment matters, and building experiential confidence in dealing with sensitive cases. This role is not desk-based; visibility and on-site engagement are essential.


Working Pattern & Location

  • Full-time (37 hrs/week) – part-time applications considered
  • Permanent contract
  • Base location: Herefordshire (schools + office + some home working)
  • Key requirement: Regular travel to school sites, flexibility for short-notice visits, and independent mobility.

Hours breakdown:

  • Average: 2–3 days per week in schools
  • Varied: Flexibility for remote work depends on case demand (some weeks may require daily attendance)
  • Important: Must be locally available to meet urgent business needs.

Key Responsibilities

Day-to-Day Advisory & Casework

  • Provide expert HR advice and employee relations support to schools and academies.
  • Handle disciplinary, grievance, capability, absence, and redundancy processes.
  • Attend school meetings (formal/informal) and act as the investigating officer for employment issues (including report writing).
  • Support HR policy development and updates, tailored to education sector needs.

Stakeholder Engagement & Training

  • Collaborate with trade unions during formal processes.
  • Contribute to change management and consultation projects.
  • Deliver HR training sessions for schools and other clients via phone, Teams, email, or in person.

Operational Support

  • Work mostly with autonomy, with back-up from Senior HR Advisors and HR Managers.
  • Balance multi-tasking skills while prioritising sensitive issues.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

Professional Standards

✔ CIPD qualified, working towards CIPD, or able to demonstrate equivalent experience and a commitment to professional development. ✔ Fluent in employment law and best practice HR principles.

Technical Skills

  • Experience in:
    • Employee relations (e.g., disciplinary/grievance management)
    • Case handling (investigation, decision-making, documentation)
  • Sensitive problem-solving with empathy and professionalism.

Soft Skills

  • Strong communication (verbal/written) to engage with stakeholders (e.g., governors, senior leads).
  • Organisational acumen to juggle competing priorities.
  • Practical, flexible, and client-focused mindset.

Preferred (Not Mandatory)

  • Experience in education sector (secondary/academy) or familiarity with scale terms and conditions.
  • Ability to apply HR knowledge specifically to school environments.

Travel & Logistics

  • Mandatory: Regular out-of-office visits to multiple schools.
    • Must be able to travel independently (no dedicated transport provided).
    • Must be available for short-notice school-related duties.
