HR AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
Location: London Contract: 3 Days Per Week (10:50am-5:30pm) Salary: £65,000 - £70,000 FTE (Pro Rata)
We are partnering with a distinguished international law firm that collaborates with governments, businesses, and private clients worldwide. Their team prides itself on being a collaborative, people-focused firm with an exceptional culture.
This is a standalone HR role that has evolved significantly over recent years. While you will retain responsibility for the full employee lifecycle and generalist HR function, there is now a stronger focus on professional development, coaching, and influencing senior leaders to drive performance, engagement, and career progression across the firm.

The Role
Reporting directly to the Managing Director and working closely with the COO and Partners, you will lead all aspects of the firm's HR function while driving learning, development, and employee engagement initiatives. This varied role blends operational HR with strategic people development, ensuring no two days are the same.
Key Responsibilities
HR Management
- Act as the firm’s first point of contact for all HR matters.
- Provide expert guidance to Partners and managers on:
- Employment law
- HR best practice
- People management
- Lead on employee relations, including:
- Disciplinary processes
- Grievance procedures
- Performance management
- Develop, review, and implement HR policies, procedures, and documentation.
- Manage the full recruitment process, partnering with hiring managers to attract top talent.
- Coordinate onboarding and induction programmes for new employees.
- Oversee annual salary, bonus, and performance appraisal processes.
- Manage annual leave, absence, and family leave policies.
- Maintain accurate HR records and optimise HR processes and systems.
- Produce HR reports and people analytics to inform business decisions.
- Support workforce and succession planning.
- Conduct exit interviews, identifying trends to improve retention.

Professional Development & Employee Engagement
- Coach and support employees to maximise performance, career progression, and personal development.
- Partner closely with Partners to:
- Influence leadership capability
- Drive engagement and capability growth
- Identify learning and development opportunities at both the individual and firm-wide levels.
- Facilitate feedback mechanisms between employees and senior leadership.
- Monitor workloads and wellbeing, fostering a positive culture.
- Develop initiatives to enhance employee engagement, retention, and overall experience.
- Champion the firm’s values as a trusted advisor across all business levels.
About You
We are seeking an experienced HR professional who thrives in an independent, professional services environment and has a genuine passion for developing individuals. Ideal candidates will:
Desirable Experience & Skills
- Previous HR Generalist or HR Manager experience in a law firm or professional services environment.
- Strong knowledge of UK employment law and HR best practice.
- Experience managing the full employee lifecycle.
- Passion for coaching, mentoring, and employee development.
- Confidence in influencing senior stakeholders and building strong relationships.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including high emotional intelligence.
- Strong judgement, resilience, and discretion when handling confidential matters.
- advantage: Experience working independently as the sole HR professional.
- CIPD Level 5 (or equivalent) — desirable.
- Recognised coaching qualification (e.g., ILM, EMCC, ICF) or demonstrable coaching experience — highly beneficial .
