HR Manager

People Partner / HR Manager

Location: Central London Hours: 3 full days per week (9:00am–6:00pm) Salary: £65,000 – £70,000 FTE (pro rata)

We’re partnering with a highly respected international law firm that collaborates with governments, businesses, and private clients globally. Known for their collaborative culture, strong team spirit, and people-first ethos, this firm now seeks a strategic HR professional to drive their evolving people strategy.

This is a standalone HR role with a defined shift from purely operational tasks to a focus on professional development, coaching, and influencing senior leadership to enhance performance, engagement, and career progression across the firm.

The Role

Reporting directly to the Managing Director and working closely with the COO and Partners, this supportive yet autonomous role requires leading all aspects of the firm’s HR and people development strategy, blending operational and strategic responsibilities:

HR Management

  • Act as the firm’s primary HR contact for all employee and managerial queries.
  • Provide expert guidance to Partners and managers on:
    • UK employment law
    • HR best practice
    • Effective people management
  • Lead on employee relations, including:
    • Disciplinary procedures
    • Grievance resolution
    • Performance management frameworks
  • Develop, review, and implement HR policies, procedures, and documentation to ensure regulatory compliance and operational excellence.
  • Oversee the full recruitment lifecycle, partnering with hiring managers to attract, assess, and onboard high-calibre talent.
  • Coordinate onboarding and induction programmes for new employees.
  • Manage annual salary and bonus reviews, alongside performance appraisals.
  • Administer annual leave, absence management, and family leave policies.
  • Maintain accurate HR records and continuously improve HR systems and digital processes.
  • Generate HR reports and people analytics to inform business strategy and decision-making.
  • Support workforce planning and succession planning strategies.
  • Conduct exit interviews to identify trends and improve employee retention.

Professional Development & Employee Engagement

  • Deliver coaching and mentoring initiatives to maximise individual performance, career growth, and personal development.
  • Engage with Partners and senior leadership to develop leadership capability across the firm.
  • Identify and facilitate learning opportunities (individual and firm-wide).
  • Promote a culture of open feedback, ensuring regular exchanges between employees and senior management.
  • Monitor workloads and wellbeing, fostering a positive, supportive workplace.
  • Design and implement engagement initiatives to enhance retention, motivation, and overall employee experience.
  • Champion the firm’s core values while acting as a trusted advisor at all business levels.

About You

We’re seeking an ethical and strategic HR professional with a passion for personal development, as well as the drive to influence senior stakeholders while delivering straightforward operational excellence.

Essential Requirements

  • Relevant HR experience: Prior HR Generalist or Manager experience within a law firm or professional services environment (essential).
  • Employment law expertise: Strong knowledge of UK employment law and proven adherence to HR best practice.
  • Full employee lifecycle management: Experience in recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and exit processes.
  • Coaching and mentoring: A true passion for coaching, mentoring, and employee development.
  • Executive influence: Confidence building relationships and influencing senior stakeholders (Partners, leadership team).
  • Communication & interpersonal skills: Exceptional verbal and written communication, with high emotional intelligence.
  • Resilience & discretion: Strong judgement when handling confidential and sensitive matters independently.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

  • Professional qualifications: CIPD Level 5 (or equivalent), ideally obtained (though not obligatory).
  • Coaching certification: Recognised qualification (e.g., ILM, EMCC, ICF) or demonstrable coaching experience.
  • Experience working solo: Previous roles as an independent HR professional would be beneficial.
