Gates is a leading manufacturer of application-specific fluid power and power transmission solutions. We push the boundaries of material science to engineer solutions that continually exceed customer expectations.

What to Expect

Gates Dumfries is one of the UK’s long‑established manufacturing sites of Gates (U.K.) Limited, headquartered in Dumfries. The company specializes in the manufacture of rubber-based industrial products. As part of Gates’ global industrial network, the Dumfries site contributes to a company employing over 400 people in the UK.

We are looking for an HSE Manager who will serve as the site’s primary expert and point of contact for all Health, Safety, and Environmental matters, ensuring full compliance with ISO and regulatory standards while maintaining up‑to‑date policies and readiness for audits. This position will lead HSE performance by monitoring key indicators, engaging with employees and external authorities, and driving continuous improvement through training, incident management, and collaboration with both local leadership and European HSE teams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Acting as the primary onsite contact for all Health, Safety, and Environmental matters.
  • Ensuring continuous compliance with ISO 9000, ISO/TS16949, ISO 14001, ISO 18000, ISO 50001 and all relevant legislation and corporate standards.
  • Maintaining and reviewing HSE policies while updating management on regulatory or procedural changes impacting responsibilities.
  • Preparing and reporting site KPIs on accidents, incidents, risks, and other metrics, and driving improvements where needed.
  • Collaborating daily with local teams and managers, and remaining available to all employees for HSE-related questions.
  • Liaising with European HSE coordinators and external authorities (HSE, SEPA, local Environmental Authority, Trading Standards, Scottish Water, BSI) to ensure strong regulatory relationships and audit readiness.
  • Leading site emergency preparedness, training activities, ISO audit coordination, and investigations, while escalating any non‑conformances requiring corrective action.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
