HSE Manager – Renewable Energy & Battery Storage
3Spires Safety is recruiting an HSE Manager for a growing renewable energy and battery storage business operating across the UK and Europe. This is a senior, standalone contract role for someone who can build the HSE framework and own it, acting as the appointed competent person to ensure delivery remains safe, compliant, and risk-controlled.
The Role
Working closely with operations, projects, and commercial teams, you will set the HSE direction across multiple sites. Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Develop and maintain HSE management systems to ISO 45001 across the UK and Europe, ensuring policy alignment with current legislation
- Act as the appointed competent person, advising leadership, escalating intolerable risks, and having the authority to stop work where there is credible evidence of imminent danger
- Support project and operational teams in:
- Risk assessments
- RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements)
- Safe systems of work
- Contractor controls, tailored to the hazards involved
- Conduct assurance activities, including:
- Inspections
- Audits
- Performance reviews
- Lead incident and near-miss investigations with:
- Clear root cause analysis
- Corrective actions, owners, and deadlines
- Maintain emergency arrangements and occupational health controls
- Report HSE KPIs to senior management
- Provide HSE input for:
- Tenders
- Change activities
- Training that strengthens safety culture

Requirements
Essential
- NEBOSH Diploma or an equivalent degree, plus Chartered membership (CMIOSH) or working towards it (GradIOSH)
- At least 8 years of experience in HSE, with proven multi-site leadership in:
- Renewables
- Energy
- Construction
- Comparable industrial settings
- Experience with high-voltage or electrically-connected environments
- Strong knowledge of:
- UK and EU health and safety legislation
- CDM Regulations
- ISO 45001 implementation experience, ideally with:
- Internal or lead auditing
- Track record as an appointed competent person, demonstrating the judgment to:
- Advise and challenge at all levels
- Fluent English
- Willingness to travel frequently across the UK and Europe

Nice to Have
- Experience in:
- Grid-scale battery storage or renewable generation
- Familiarity with:
- BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems) and electrical safety standards (e.g., IEC 62933, UL 9540)
- ISO 45001 Lead Auditor certification
- A second European language (e.g., German, French)
