HSW Manager
Health and Safety Manager – Defence Project Support (Cumbria)

About This Role
We are seeking a **Health and Safety (HSW) Manager to lead health, safety and wellbeing across Defence programmes in Cumbria, supporting a multi-year initiative within air systems and regulated environments. This critical role ensures HSW leadership, compliance with standards, and safe project delivery.
The position will commence late autumn to early winter, operating within an integrated client team in a secure, highly regulated environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive implementation and enforcement of HSW policies, procedures, and standards across assigned construction, defence, or aerospace programmes.
- Oversee preparation for external audits ISO 9001 (Quality), 14001 (Environmental), and 45001 (OH&M) standards.
- Conduct HSW inspections, risk assessments and audits, coordinating schedules and ensuring compliance assurance.
- Analyse HSW data, KPIs and audit findings to identify improvement opportunities and oversee corrective action plans.
- Lead incident investigations in line with company and defence procedures.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of HSW standards, processes, and collaborative working practices.
- Build relationships with internal teams, clients and supply chain partners to embed safety culture.
- Manage stakeholders effectively whilst supporting delivery of net zero carbon and energy efficiency targets.
- Ensure adherence to UK Healthcare and safety legislation, governance protocols, and procurement compliance.

Requirements & Experience
- Eligibility for UK security clearance.
- Proven expertise in HSW legislation, systems, auditing and risk management—preferably Defence/Aerospace sector experience.
- Experience leading HSW cross-functional teams in project environments—preferably within defence, Infrastructure, or critical facilities.
- Ability to analyse technical HSW data and translate it into effective communication for non-specialist stakeholders.
- Formal qualifications in HSW:
- Core: NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent (Level 3 minimum).
- Additional: Compliance experience, IOSH Managing Safely®, or sector-specific qualifications (e.g. Defence Academy, CDM, or Process Safety topics).
- Strong proactive problem-solving with a meticulous attention to detail.
- Self-motivated independent worker with strong stakeholder relationship-building skills.
Bonus:
- Experience in ISO Management System integration or defence sector HSW.
- Understanding of Defence ISO 45001 or airside/defence perimeter safety regulations.
