HSW Manager

Senior Health and Safety Manager

About the Role

We are looking for a Health and Safety Manager to join our Defence team in Cumbria, supporting a major long-term programme operating within Air System and Defence environments. In this role, you will bring visible HSW (Health, Safety and Wellbeing) leadership, driving compliance with standards, policies, and procedures while enabling project teams to deliver safe and successful outcomes.

Based in a secure, highly regulated environment, this position typically commences in late autumn to early winter.


Key Responsibilities

  • Compliance and Leadership

    • Drive the implementation and compliance of HSW policies, procedures, and standards across assigned projects.
  • Standards and Inspections

    • Lead preparation for external ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001 audits, ensuring organisational readiness.
    • Conduct HSW inspections and audits, coordinate schedules, and support assurance activities.
    • Analyse audit findings, KPIs, incident reports, and corrective actions to identify gaps and improvement opportunities.
  • Incident and Risk Management

    • Oversee incident investigations, adhering to business procedures.
    • Provide expertise in risk mitigation and overall safety governance.

  • Process Improvement

    • Contribute to developing and evolving HSW standards, processes, and working practices.
  • Stakeholder and Relationship Management

    • Build strong internal and external relationships with clients, supply chain partners, and project teams.
    • Manage stakeholders effectively across complex project environments.
  • Net Zero Contributions

    • Support the delivery of net zero carbon objectives by proactively identifying and managing HSW-related environmental impacts.

Requirements

Experience

  • Strong working knowledge of HSW legislation, management systems, auditing, and risk assessment.

  • Relevant experience providing tailoring HSW support in defence, construction, or project-heavy environments.

  • Ability to translate technical information for non-technical stakeholders.

  • Proven track record in protective problem-solving, delivering outcomes under deadlines.

  • Excellent communicative skills with clear stakeholder engagement.

  • Discretionary security clearance eligibility (UK right-to-work status).

Qualifications

  • A ** Level 3 safety management qualification** (e.g. NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent).
  • Formal additional health & safety training (if applicable).
