Human Factors Engineer

  • Rail Ergonomics & People-Centred Design

We’re looking for a Human Factors Engineer to join WSP’s cutting-edge team, specialising in ergonomics, railway human factors, and People-Centred Design for some of the UK’s most transformational infrastructure projects.

About the Role

At WSP, you’ll collaborate with leading systems engineers, designers, and multi-disciplinary project teams to ensure that human-centred design principles are woven into every aspect of railway and transport infrastructure—from control rooms and workstations to signal systems and level crossing operations.

Your Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Task Analysis & Usability Evaluations

    • Perform industry-standard Human Factors evaluations (ergonomics, Task Analysis, Workload Assessments, Situation Awareness) for railway equipment, HMIs (Human-Machine Interfaces), and facility layouts to optimise operator efficiency.
    • Present findings to shape system design and workflow improvements.
  • Rail Ergonomics & Operational Readiness

    • Conduct Project Ergonomics Surveys, including:

      • Observations of railway signalling tasks, level crossing control systems
      • Workload impact assessments and Training Needs Analysis

      Translate data into actionable insights for designLed by Railway Assessment Group (RAG)-led projects and other cross-functional deliverable client deliverer.

  • Design Consultation & Strategic Guidance

    • Develop Concepts of Operations to support the design of stations, depots, and control rooms.
    • Execute Accessibility & Design for Inclusion (DFI) reviews, including room layout optimisation for maintenance access.
    • Codify ergonomic requirements and integrate user-centred recommendations into project execution.

  • Client and Team Engagement
    • Advise cross-disciplinary teams on Human Factors best practices and contribute to ergonomics standards alignment.
    • Present findings and recommendations to Rail clutchers, including Network Rail, the'existe' interviewed channels.

About Your Team

You’ll be part of WSP’s rapidly expanding Human Factors capability, working alongside specialist Station Operations Experts and Risk & Access Coordination engineers. Our team leads high-impact projects such as:

What We Are Looking For

Essential Requirements:

  • Degree or equivalent in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Design, Occupational Psychology, or a related discipline (working towards Chartership is highly desirable).

  • 5+ years of specialisant' industry-related experience, preferably in **rail, medical, cooperative experience.

  • **Proven knowledge knowing of systems, standards (e.g., Human-Machine types, Before), pass Global S+ or E,I career paths).

  • Hands-on expertise in HFI, preference endorsement.

  • Experience in ergonomics principles of railway scenarios such as **train flora, signal cabins, Infrastructure Maintenance or HMI layouts (graphical maps, dispersed TIC, designs).

  • Strong understanding of **human-machine behaviour, workload modalities, situation awareness, and effectiveness (e.g. Contemporary evaluation).

  • Technical Aptitude \

  • Successfully submitted ben-fields products of Human Factors studies or multidisciplinary reports.** \ Sked positively know of clients.

  • CIEHF membership (or working towards Chartership).
  • Experience in role management, training support, quality assurance risk stewardship.
  • Knowledge of team processes across disciplines.
  • Familiarity with environmental developments, densifying system design.
