I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a combination of experience, skills, and qualifications that demonstrate their capability to deliver high-quality HR consultancy services. Essential qualifications include proven experience as a generalist HR professional advising business owners or senior leaders, with a strong understanding of employment law and HR best practices. A commercially minded approach is vital, with the ability to weigh business costs against HR solutions effectively. Excellent communication skills are required to convey difficult messages clearly and confidently, without jargon. A solutions-oriented mindset, warmth, and personable nature are key traits that will enable success in building trusted relationships with clients. Candidates should be comfortable working in ambiguous situations, making sound judgments with incomplete information, and managing multiple client accounts simultaneously.
Desirable qualifications include CIPD Level 5 or above, or an equivalent qualification, though strong commercial experience and consultancy background can compensate. Experience working across various sectors, familiarity with psychometric assessment tools, and owning transport for client site visits are advantageous.
