HR Shared Services Manager (People Operations) - Birmingham (Hybrid)
Our client, a large professional services organisation with a significant Birmingham presence, is looking for a People Operations Manager to lead a team within their HR Shared Service Centre.
This role requires prior experience managing a team inside a shared service or HR operations centre - a high-volume, SLA-driven, case-managed environment - and is not open to candidates whose background is HR Business Partnering or generalist HR Management without that operating model. The two skillsets don't transfer: this is about running a transactional service against volume and turnaround targets, not advisory relationship management with business stakeholders.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

You will manage a team of three direct reports within a wider function of around fifteen to eighteen, reporting into the Senior People Operations Manager. This is not a Head of People Operations or Director-level position, and it does not carry standalone ownership of firm-wide people strategy - this role sits within an established senior leadership structure and takes forward the operational and transformation priorities that structure sets.
Day to day, you will
- Own the team's case and query volumes against SLA targets
- Run transactional processing across the employee lifecycle including onboarding administration, contractual changes, and screening
- Keep policies, processes, and documentation properly governed
- Contribute to service improvement work already underway - supporting the rollout of new HR technology, refining onboarding and screening processes
- Help build stronger visibility and relationships with functions like Payroll, Talent Acquisition, and HR Business Partnering

Beyond shared service centre experience, we are looking for someone who has managed a sizeable HR or people operations team - including team leaders, performance management, and coaching.
Experience in professional services is highly desirable; a CIPD qualification is a plus but not essential.
