Human Skeletal Biologist

Overview

Our client is seeking a Human Skeletal Biologist to join their team on a fixed-term maternity cover contract. This role is based in Portsmouth, with hybrid working available. The successful candidate will support specialist work relating to the treatment, study, curation, and public value of human skeletal remains within a heritage and archaeological context.

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled osteoarchaeology professional to contribute to strategic advice, casework, research, collections access, and public engagement within a respected heritage environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Senior Human Skeletal Biologist in providing strategic and casework advice on the treatment of human remains.
  • Advise internal teams and external stakeholders on matters relating to human skeletal remains.
  • Undertake heritage science research aligned with organisational strategic objectives.
  • Contribute to innovative research involving human remains from archaeological contexts.
  • Support public engagement activities that increase the value and accessibility of research on human remains.
  • Facilitate access for external users to human remains collections.
  • Contribute to the care, curation, and management of relevant collections.
  • Work closely with senior specialists and collections colleagues to deliver role objectives.
  • Build constructive relationships with a wide range of internal and external partners.

Requirements

  • Postgraduate qualification in Osteoarchaeology, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Proven expertise in the identification and study of human skeletal remains from archaeological sites.
  • Strong understanding of the ethical, practical, and professional considerations involved in working with human remains.
  • Ability to take personal responsibility for work and follow tasks through to completion.
  • Confident, adaptable communication style.
  • Ability to work constructively with internal teams, external clients, researchers, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong teamwork skills, including a willingness to learn, collaborate, and contribute to shared objectives.
  • Interest in heritage science, archaeological research, collections access, and public engagement.
