HV Engineer - Newcastle
We are currently seeking an HV Engineer, based in Newcastle, to join the Grid & Digital Solutions department within the Thermal Power & HVDC division of Metlen. Your role will encompass:

- Lead end-to-end delivery of primary HV plant and MV design packages, from concept through to construction, including single-line diagrams, layouts, and equipment specification
- Provide technical governance by reviewing, approving, and signing off internal and third-party designs for accuracy, compliance, and constructability
- Act as the discipline lead for Primary Plant and MV engineering, mentoring engineers and coordinating with Protection & Control, Civil, Cable, and Project Delivery teams
- Manage interfaces between HV primary, HV secondary (P&C), and MV systems, ensuring design consistency and integration
- Interface with clients and stakeholders, representing the contractor as the subject matter expert in primary plant design
- Support procurement activities, including preparation of technical specifications, evaluation of supplier bids, and review of vendor documentation and drawings
- Coordinate with consortium partners, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure timely and compliant design delivery
- Travel to project sites, supplier facilities, and client or partner offices as required
What you bring to the role:
- Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in HV/MV engineering within transmission/substation environments
- Strong UK experience in primary substation design (132kV–400kV, AIS/GIS) and MV systems (11kV–33kV), including knowledge of National Grid and Scottish Power standards
- Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary design coordination, manage multiple workstreams, and mentor engineers
- Strong technical expertise in primary plant design, with high attention to detail and ability to deliver under time constraints
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with experience engaging clients and project partners
