Jointer (Permanent) – East Killbride
Summary
Freedom are currently recruiting a Jointer to join a team undertaking cable jointing works on paper/lead and polymeric cables, alongside fitting/wireman duties to support substation upgrades and equipment replacements. The role ensures safe, high-quality workmanship and delivers fit-for-purpose network solutions for clients while promoting a positive company image.
Key deliverables include:
- Installing power cable joints and terminations on paper/lead or polymeric underground/substation systems, switchgear, transformers, and associated equipment (up to 33kV).
- Supporting plant/equipment replacement, including multicores and earthing cables.
- Progressing to Authorised Person (AP) status under SPEN’s Safety Rules, granting:
- Independent access to substations with live conductors.
- Ability to issue a permit-to-work.
- Capacity to supervise working parties.
- Recognising best practices and driving innovation.
- Maintaining company property safety, ensuring PAT/testing compliance, and reporting non-serviceable items.
- Assisting technical staff (Authorised Person Supervisors) with cable identification, spiking, phasing, and pressure testing (up to 33kV).
Responsibilities
- Cable Jointing & Installations:
- Working on 33kV cable terminations, joints, and terminations across substations and underground systems.
- Ensuring safe and high-quality installations to meet operational specifications.
- Substation Maintenance & Equipment Upgrades:
- Supporting repair/replacement projects involving transformers, switchgear, and multicores.
- Ensuring operational readiness post-installation.
- Safety Compliance & Authorisations:
- Progressing towards Authorised Person (AP) status under SPEN’s rules.
- Contributing to a safe working culture with adherence to CDM regulations.
- Technical Assistance:
- Supporting technical teams with cable testing, pressure checks, and phasing.
- Equipment & Workplace Safety:
- Maintaining company tools and equipment in working order.
- Reporting any non-serviceable items promptly.
- Health, Safety & Innovation:
- Leading safety procedures to safeguard workers and projects.
- Exploring improvements through innovation and new practices.

Requirements
Experience & Skills
- Cable Jointing or HV Fitting background (preferred).
- Minimum 2 years in practical or craft duties with hand tools.
- Basic knowledge of electrical/mechanical systems in substations.
- Manual Handling certification or CDM site experience.
- Live-working knowledge (must align with relevant DNO Authorisations).
- Full UK driving licence (sigma to vehicle provision).
Certifications & Accreditations
- CDM Safety Passport or equivalent-site experience.
- Authority to receive/issue permits-to-work (PTW) (desirable, e.g., SPEN ENW/NPG).
- Patent Testing (PAT) awareness for assigned tools.
