HV Transmission Senior Project Engineer
Initial 12 Month Contract
Outside IR35
Landulph, Cornwall – 5 days per week
A Senior Project Engineer with experience of National Grid substation projects and HV Transmission is required to work on a long term contract basis in Cornwall.
Job Description/Purpose
This role will be focused on HV Transmission and distribution. Alongside the Project Director, senior project manager the individual will have overall accountability for successful project delivery including initiation, planning, design, delivery, monitoring, commissioning and handover/close out.
The individual will support in formalising and specifying an engineered delivery solution, brief out the solution to the working party and ensure it is completed through effective management and leadership. They will manage and care for the people delivering the works whilst monitoring compliance to customer/project requirements, objectives and constraints, time, cost, quality and safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Project Director / Senior Project Manager in delivering the project
- As the HV Transmission Senior Project Engineer, you will support in preparing both internal/external project reports and liaise with engineers and stakeholders
- Initiates good scope/information/configuration management principles and work closely with the tendering and design teams
- Ensures direct reports provide relevant information which enable decisions to be made which are informed, cost effective and in line with overall strategy
- Supports to ensures scope and package assignment supports the team in coordinating and maintaining working Health Safety & Environmental
- Responsible for the safety and welfare of the general public, employees and supply chain in and around their project
- As the HV Transmission Senior Project Engineer, you will carry out periodic Safety & Environmental Tours and promotes observation and safety initiatives
- Produce plans for the team to achieve goals and development aspirations
- Develop high performing teams, promote a pipeline of talent and assist with internal training through supporting, guiding, motivating and empowering the team.
- As the HV Transmission Senior Project Engineer, you will specify, understand, develop and implement technical information and drawings into delivery
- Responsible for the entire life cycle of the project from project start to close and through the warranty period
Accountability
Design
- Lead Value Engineering Process
- Lead the development and management of the design deliverables programme
- Ensure that learning and best practice is captured from the bid/project with the aim of sharing it across the business stream and the business.
- Support BIM management during the bid stage ensuring the supply chain is fully aware of BIM requirements
- Liaise with all statutory bodies/authorities as required – such as town planning, building control and services e.g. gas and water.
- Manage change control
- Manage and ensure effective briefing of the design team (civil and M&E element), includes ensuring that they meet all customer specifications

Governance
- Champion effective reporting routines including escalation as required
- Communicates the project expectations of team members to clarify roles and ensure accountability for the achievement of project goals.
- Ensure the team maintain accurate project records by updating daily progress sheets and keeping daily diaries.
- Supports in the preparation of both internal/external project reports
Commercial & Contract
- Budget ownership
- Ensure that expenditure is in line with the budget and that materials and contractors are utilised efficiently to ensure cost control.
- Improves project margins by actively controlling costs (e.g., staffing the project with cost effective resources and minimizing re-work)
- Manages cash flow by resolving issues with budget, billing efficiencies, and payments
- Able to identify elements for cost recovery from others
- Incorporate and balance both operational and commercial constraints into decision making
- Analyse, appraise and implement CEs
- Manage commercial change
- Requestion of equipment and materials
Health Safety & Environmental
- Carry out weekly Safety & Environmental Tours/promote observation and safety initiatives
- Support Accident/Incident Investigations and monitor effectiveness of the H&S Management System and implement improvement solutions on the project.
- Leads by example; creates positive safety culture.
- Write and review RAMS and accepting subcontractor RAMS
Risk, Issue & Opportunity
- Lead risk/opportunity reviews, present the Risk Register and recommend/implement changes
- Log and escalate any issues that cannot be resolved at delegated level of authority.
Procurement & Supply Chain
- As the HV Transmission Senior Project Engineer, you will manage subcontractors, including monitoring of contractor attendance and progress, providing direct instruction and support as necessary, such that contractual arrangements are achieved
- Ensure procurement plans are available in line with the overall project plans, such that material/resources/supply chain can be delivered to meet scheduled deadlines.

- Ensure scope and package assignment supports the team in coordinated working

- Accountable for KPI’s in line with project objectives and monitor performance
- Ensure assurance activities (audits) are undertaken and take appropriate action on findings
Schedule
- Develop, implement, review and periodically update resource and cost loaded schedules
- As the HV Transmission Senior Project Engineer, you will ensure team adopt productivity and project controls techniques
- Monitor progress and implement Control processes/hold weekly meeting as per Client and, or processes and procedures
- Ensure production of operational milestones reflect the agreed master schedule and customer expectations
- Establish robust change control process
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
- Working in a complex project environment with multiple stakeholders.
- As the HV Transmission Senior Project Engineer, you will have some experience in Design Management.
- Management/construction or experience equivalent.
- Ability to see the business vision and inspire this shared vision amongst the team.
Desirable
- Experience of working on a variety of National Grid substation project types.
- Holds a current driving licence
- As the HV Transmission Senior Project Engineer, you will be able to demonstrate a track record of project delivery
- Good understanding of the standard forms of contracts
- Proficient in commercial/project management communications
- Experience in implementing safe systems of work
- Holds a current driving license
Qualifications
Essential
- HND or Degree level in Engineering or Management / Construction discipline
Desirable
- Member of a professional management body i.e. APM
- CSCS and SMSTS or Equivalent
- NG NSI 4 or NSI 6 & 8
