HVAC Engineer

HVAC Engineer

Application Deadline: 31 May 2026 Department: Facilities Location: Cheadle Compensation: £45,000 - £47,000 / year

Description

Help maintain the critical environments supporting world-leading health research.

At UK Biobank, our facilities infrastructure supports one of the world’s largest biomedical research resources including laboratories, clinics, MRI facilities, and ultra-low temperature biological sample storage systems.

As we continue moving into our brand-new headquarters at Manchester Science Park, we’re looking for an HVAC Engineer to help support the environmental systems and critical infrastructure that keep these operations running safely and efficiently.

This is a highly practical, hands-on role within a unique technical environment where reliability, responsiveness, and problem solving genuinely matter.

Can you do it?

You’ll be responsible for supporting HVAC systems and associated plant equipment across UK Biobank’s Manchester headquarters and wider UK sites.

Working alongside a specialist Estates & Technical Services team, you’ll help maintain critical environmental conditions across laboratories, clinics, storage systems, and office environments including supporting systems linked to large-scale biological sample preservation.

The role combines maintenance, fault diagnosis, repairs, commissioning, and operational support across a complex facilities environment. You’ll also work closely with specialist suppliers and engineering partners while supporting systems that operate continuously and are critical to research activities.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys practical engineering work within a highly specialised setting.

You will be responsible for:

  • Managing all HVAC and supporting services for UK Biobank’s new headquarters Greenheys on Manchester Science Park.
  • Providing maintenance, fault diagnosis and first line repairs to all plant equipment including but not limited to, HVAC systems, controls, chillers, pump sets etc.
  • Assisting with installation, commissioning, validation, calibration and ongoing maintenance of plant, equipment and systems, working with support engineers and other personnel from suppliers.
  • Liaising with the operators of Manchester Science Park on any plant systems that have dual responsibility.
  • Willing to support out of hours working responding to system / site failures that are critical to sample and system preservation.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
