HVDC Lead Engineer
Lead Verification and Validation Engineer – HVDC Control Systems

As Lead Verification and Validation Engineer, you’ll take ownership of ensuring HVDC Control Systems meet rigorous standards by designing, executing, and refining tests on Controls Software. This role demands both technical precision and a consumer’s mindset—confirming that the software builds correctly and the right software is built, aligned with customer and project requirements.
Key Responsibilities

Test Design & Execution
- Design and develop test cases based on software requirements.
- Execute test procedures and deliver structured, clear reporting of results.

Analysis & Communication
- Review and analyse test findings, including status updates and issue reporting.
- Clearly communicate failures and technical gaps to engineering teams.

Schedule & Collaboration
- Align testing activities with project plan milestones.
- Partner with Continuous Improvement teams to refine tools, methodologies, and processes.

Process Enthusiast
- Promote a standardised product methodology, improving reusability, quality, and delivery timelines.

Client & Laboratory Leadership
- Lead the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) with clients.
- Identify test gaps between design/standard requirements and customer technical demands.

Specialised Technical Expertise
- Provide RTDS lab expertise, covering:
- AC/DC interface testing.
- Plant Emulator interface requirements.
- Power system modelling and verification in RSCAD.
- Apply robust problem-solving skills to troubleshoot test execution, lab setup issues, and debugging challenges.

Qualifications & Experience
Must-Have (Essential Requirements)
- Engineering degree (or equivalent) with power systems/power electronics focus, or equivalent HVDC knowledge/experience.
- Strong grasp of the Software Development Life Cycle, particularly the V-Model.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills in testing environments, lab setups, and debugging.
- Urgency mindset with the ability to identify and manage technical risks.
- Exceptional written/verbal communication for detail-heavy documentation.
- Ability to interpret complex software requirements.
- Understanding of functional characteristics of power systems.
- Proven adaptability to meet deadlines under pressure without compromising safety, quality, or integrity.
- Flexibility to adjust work hours when needed.

Preferred (Desired Characteristics)
- Agile or Scrum methodology experience.
- Jira proficiency in test management workflows.
- Familiarity with test automation/management tools.
- Hands-on expertise with:
- Excel, PowerPoint, Word.
- HVDC control systems, protection sequencing strategies.
- HVDC station equipment and interlocking design.
- PSCAD/RSCAD dynamic performance studies.
- Line-Commutated Converters (LCC) or Voltage Source Converters (VSC).
- Advanced tools:
- MATLAB, PSCAD, PSS/E, RSCAD, MATCAD.
- Knowledge of relevant electrical standards (e.g., IEC 61850, IEC 62351, IEC 12207, IEEE 15288, IEC 25010, IEC 27032, NERC/CIP).
- Industry experience in HVDC systems.
