About Thales
Thales is a global technology leader with over 83,000 employees across five continents. In the UK, 7,500+ colleagues deliver cutting-edge solutions in defence, space, aerospace, and digital security.
Our mission? To build a future we can trust by empowering security, stability, and value through transformative technology.
The Opportunity: Fusion of Mathematics & AI for CEME
If you’re an expert at the intersection of deep mathematics and modern AI, we want you. This is more than algorithmic research—it’s about fusing classical physics with adaptive machine learning to deliver robust, explainable, and agile solutions.
As a Hybrid Algorithm Researcher, you’ll:
- Lead low-TRL innovation in Advanced Signal Processing (ASP) and Position, Navigation & Timing (PNT).
- Pioneer hybrid algorithms where strict mathematical rigor meets flexible AI adaptability.
- Design systems resilient to jamming, spoofing, and contested environments—essential for modern electronic warfare.
🧠 The Mission
Fuse paradigms where physics meets intelligence. Your work will impact:
- Advanced signal/phenomenology modelling and real-time data fusion
- State estimation techniques for target tracking in chaotic sensor environments
- Defence-grade algorithmic solutions compatible with legacy and modern systems
- Cutting-edge R&D that transitions lab innovation to field-hardened prototypes
Reasons to use Rodeo
I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

- Time/Frequency domain theory and signal representation (Fourier, Wavelet, or compressed sensing).
- Classical filter design: EKF, unscented Kalman (UKF), or Lie group-based estimation.
- Physics-Informed ML/AI, e.g., reparameterisation of model parameters or neural solver design.
- ** Target tracking & data fusion** with robustness to noisy or jammed signals.
Technical Toolkit
- Primary programming: C++ for prototypes and performance-critical code.
- Rapid ideation/reprojection: Python/numpy + tools like TensorFlow/PyTorch.
- Classic DSP engines: MATLAB, Mathematica, or Octave for exploration.
Additional Expectations
- Academic roots: Minimum STEM qualifier degree (BSc, MSc, or PhD) in Physics, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science.
- Project leadership: Ability to design research specs, risk-assess, and align trials with programme needs.
