Role: Cloud Infrastructure and Platforms Specialist

As a Cloud Infrastructure and Platforms Specialist, you’ll take responsibility for:

  • Developing cloud infrastructure and platforms, including Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platforms as a Service (PaaS) within South Wales Police’s managed cloud tenants.
  • Leading a team of junior ICT Specialists, ensuring service availability, security, and standards compliance.
  • Driving process improvements and enhancing system performance.

Responsibilities

Construction and maintenance of managed cloud solutions. Designing and deploying cloud infrastructure, including compute and platform services. Overseeing cloud performance tuning, policy, and management. Developing and maintaining documentation for cloud processes and procedures.

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to identify and resolve system issues.
  • Developing and maintaining security protocols for cloud solutions.
  • Planning and executing disaster recovery and business continuity procedures.
  • Providing IT specialist advice to business users and IT peers.
  • Managing technical staff within your area of expertise.

Requirements

  • A degree-level qualification or equivalent demonstrated experience and abilities.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and leading projects in areas including:
    • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
    • Awareness of the strategic operational impacts of effective IT on the organisation.

Where Your Role Will Fit In

This position will be based in the Technical Standards section of the ICT Department, where you will report to the Technical Standards Manager.

South Wales Police’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Department supports a broad range of tasks—from first-line service desks and second-line technical help to third-line specialist architecture and design. The department also handles IT Security, Service Management, Business Support, and Project Management, ensuring continuous improvement in services, software, platforms, and hardware across the full IT lifecycle.

Key functions include:

  • Maintaining secure and efficient 24/7 operations for around 10,000 users across 100 geographically dispersed locations.
  • Supporting over 20,000 computers, including multiple datacentres and cloud services.
  • Managing the network, physical and virtual infrastructure.
