PhD Opportunity in Perioperative & Intensive Care Medicine – Novel Mechanical Ventilator Research
About the Role
UHP is offering a rare opportunity to pursue a PhD as part of an NIHR-funded research programme, evaluating a novel mechanical ventilator for use in operating theatres and intensive care units across the NHS.
Based at UHP, this three-year role involves collaboration with three NIHR Biomedical Research Centres (Birmingham, Southampton, and University College London). The research doctoral training will be delivered by the University of Plymouth.
Applicants must be doctors in their anaesthetic or intensive care medicine training programme with a clear commitment to research and enthusiasm for clinical academic leadership.

- Pursue a funded PhD at the University of Plymouth, supervised by programme investigators.
- Ideate, design and execute quality clinical research, whilst maintaining attainment of clinical training competencies.
- Engage in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary research team to drive innovations in respiratory care.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
