Location: Remote (UK)

Contract: 6 months initial (extensions could be up to 36 months)
Start Date: ASAP

We are currently hiring for an experienced IDMS Database Administrators (DBAs) to support a large-scale, business-critical mainframe environment for a UK-based enterprise client.

This is an opportunity to work within a highly skilled team, maintaining and optimising legacy systems that underpin core business operations. You will play a key role in ensuring the stability, performance, and security of IDMS database environments.

As an IDMS DBA, you will be responsible for:

  • Administering and maintaining CA IDMS environments, including installation, configuration, upgrades, and patching
  • Monitoring IDMS regions to ensure high availability and performance
  • Managing IDMS-DC (Data Communications) environments and resolving communication issues
  • Supporting application teams working with ADS and COBOL, including development and deployment activity
  • Designing and maintaining schemas and subschemas, ensuring data integrity and efficient database structures
  • Monitoring database performance, identifying bottlenecks, and implementing tuning improvements (buffers, indexing, storage)
  • Managing backup, recovery, and journaling processes, ensuring minimal downtime and data loss
  • Troubleshooting incidents, conducting root cause analysis, and implementing long-term fixes
  • Enforcing security controls and ensuring compliance with governance and regulatory requirements
  • Maintaining clear documentation and supporting knowledge sharing across teams

We are looking for candidates with:

  • 5+ years’ experience working as an IDMS DBA in large enterprise or mainframe environments
  • Strong expertise in: CA IDMS, IDMS-DC, ADS (Application Development System) COBOL
  • Proven experience with schema and subschema design and maintenance
  • Strong background in performance monitoring and tuning
  • Experience with backup, recovery, journaling, and disaster recovery planning
  • Hands-on experience with database restructure activities (unload/reload/reorg)

Key Technologies:

CA IDMS, IDMS-DC, ADS, COBOL, JCL, TSO/ISPF, performance monitoring tools (e.g. PMDC), backup and recovery utilities

What we’re looking for:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in complex environments
  • Clear communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Understanding of mainframe security, access control, and governance
  • Experience working within structured environments (e.g. ITIL, ServiceNow)

This is a strong opportunity for an experienced IDMS DBA to secure a very long-term contract working on critical enterprise systems, with the potential for extended engagement and meaningful technical impact.
