Improvement Advisor (Ref: 250669)
Salary: £52,845 - £61,466 (Band 7)
Hours: Full time (36 hours per week)
Duration: Fixed-term contract/secondment until 31 May 2027
Location: Edinburgh/Glasgow – hybrid working will apply for the foreseeable future (all roles require routine travel for in-person meetings, site visits, workshops and events)
About the Role
Healthcare Improvement Scotland is the national improvement agency for health and social care in Scotland. We are seeking to recruit an improvement advisor to support the scoping, design, and delivery of national improvement and implementation programmes.
We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, and motivated individual to work within the Medical and Safety Directorate’s Perinatal, Paediatric, and Acute Adult Care portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
The portfolio is a component of the Scottish Patient Safety Programme (SPSP) and delivers a range of programmes including:
- SPSP Adults in Hospital: Aims to improve outcomes and experience for adults in hospital.
- SPSP Paediatric: Engages with teams delivering paediatric inpatient care to improve outcomes for children, young people, and families.
- SPSP Perinatal and the developing Acute Perinatal Improvement Programme: Aim to improve outcomes and experiences for women, birthing people, babies, and families.
- Focus on Frailty: Aims to improve the experience of and access to person-centred, coordinated health and social care services for people living with, or at risk of frailty.

The successful candidate will combine excellent improvement, communication, and analytical skills with a high degree of self-awareness, experience in managing relationships in a collaborative environment, and effective project and programme management techniques. The ability to build relationships and motivate people and organisations to drive significant change is a key part of this role. Therefore, strong communication, interpersonal, and team-working skills are required.
Key Requirements
The work will be innovative and complex and is focused on developing, testing, and spreading a range of approaches to drive safe, effective, and person-centred improvements. A key element of this role is engaging with a wide range of stakeholders to develop and deliver these complex programmes of work.

You will be accustomed to working in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and managing competing priorities. You will manage and prioritise your own work schedule and be flexible to support other programmes within the portfolio as needed.
