Improvement Manager – National Improvement Service (NIS)
The National Improvement Service (NIS) supports quality assurance and improvement in social work practice across Public and Private Law proceedings, empowering Cafcass to deliver exceptional experiences for children and young people.
As Improvement Manager, you’ll drive practice improvement nationally, influencing how we support practitioners, enhance outcomes for children and families, and foster a culture of continuous learning and development.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and delivering training, quality assurance, and auditing
- Providing targeted improvement support, including incident response for both internal and external submissions
- Collaborating with operational teams on targeted improvement initiatives
- Embedding evidence-based practice improvements

About the Role
This dynamic and flexible role operates in a hybrid remote setting. While location flexibility is a key benefit, occasional in-person attendance for team meetings, development days, and training delivery is expected.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support quality assurance and improvement activity across Cafcass, using:
- Data and audit findings
- Learning insights
- Feedback and practice expertise
- Work closely with operational managers and leaders to:
- Identify practice strengths and areas for development
- Support the implementation of evidence-informed changes
- Design and deliver training programmes aligned with organisational goals.
- Conduct quality assurance audits and action feedback effectively.
- Respond to significant incidents, producing submissions for internal and external review.
- Partner with operational teams on targeted improvement work, providing hands-on support and guidance.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Must hold a qualification or registration in social work (e.g., qualified social worker or equivalent).
- Registered with Social Work England.
- A track record of developing systems to improve practice for children.
- Quality assurance or audit experience in a child protection or safeguarding context.
- Training development/delivery experience, with a proven ability to engage practitioners.
DesirableCriteria
- 3+ years’ experience working with children and families.
- Skills in monitoring, managing, and improving team and individual performance.
- Experience with significant incident response, including reports, analyses, or interventions.
