Work Support Worker – Disability Employment Role

Salary: £15 per hour Location: Various London sites Hours: Flexible, as required


About the Organisation

Founded in 1979, this organisation is one of London’s leading Disabled People’s Organisations (DPOs).-aligned with the Social Model of Disability, the organisation promotes inclusive workplaces, co-production, and diversity, ensuring Disabled people lead in shaping services.

A medium-sized charity with:

  • A Board of Trustees
  • 24 permanent staff
  • A pool of casual workers and volunteers, many with lived disability experience
  • A mission to remove structural barriers faced by Disabled people

Focus: The Employment Service

The Employment Department sets the agenda forDisability employment in lorvances:

  • Develops and delivers Supported Internships
  • Offers holistic employment support, from employer engagement to on-site guidance and supervision
  • Welcomes referrals for Disabled individuals seeking part-time or permanent employment
  • Expanding via a newly established team with additional support workers

The Post: Work Support Worker

Role Summary To provide **live-to-face support to Disabled individuals in effective, meaning long-term to safeguard, supported employment, focusing on improving occupational independence.

  1. Direct Support Delivery

    • Work alongside a Supervisor to follow each individual’s personalised support plan within a supported workplace.
    • Assess the tasks and requirements for each role to understand step-by-step requirements.
    • Ensure the Disabled person develops confidence, competence, and progression.
  2. Professional Engagement

    • Engage closely with the employer to discuss workplace adjustments, training needs, and collaboration strategies.
    • Produce monthly progress reports and updates to Supervisors (record keeping, support amendments, skill developments).

  1. Planned Reduction in Support

    • In collaboration with the Supervisor, gradually reduce support as the individual demonstrates readiness, aligning with their career development goals.
  2. Key Responsibilities for Reasonable Adjustments

    • Negotiate and arrange Disability-related workplace adjustments in line with the employer and support plan.
    • Act as an interface between the individual, employer, and Supervisor on issues including progress tracking, challenges, and solutions.

🛠️ Essential Qualifications and Skills:

  • Must prove experience working with Disabled people, ideally through professional placements, formal support roles, or lived experience.
  • Training, Education, or Employment Support Delivery: Evidence of success in guiding learners/supporting in Employment or Vocational settings.
  • Mathematics and English proficiency up to GCSE Grade C (Numeracy and Literacy) or identified equivalence.
  • Willingness to complete specific training for the role.
  • Understands health needs of employers alongside employees and can articulate the benefits of having a diverse workforce.
  • Knowledge of the Social Model of Disability – how to operationalise it in supporting workers.
  • Skilled in problems-solving and formulating strategies to assist the individual. (Mention 'demonstrate')
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills – ability to build trust across diverse groups and departments.
  • Organisational skill with meticulous record-keeping.
  • Proficient with industry standard software:
    • Microsoft Word
    • Excel
    • Outlook
    • PowerPoint
    • Internet tools (Use for digital chasing or documentation)
  • Travel Readiness: Comfortable and mobile in London for in-person site visits and support under commute to employer sites as assigned.
  • Flexible to work adjustments, which may involve relevant off-peak schedules or covering-demand periods.
