Independent Member Conduct Adviser (Permanent)
Salary Range: £1,000 annually (total package) Contract Type: Permanent Directorate: Legal & Governance Pay Grade: Within Council Constitution (referenced in constitution agreements) Weekly Hours: 2
About the Role
As an Independent Person, you will provide critical independent and impartial advice to the Council on complaints against Councillors, ensuring compliance with the Members' Code of Conduct. This is a key role in upholding governance standards and ethical behaviour within local council operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Consult on and provide independent views regarding complaints under the Members' Code of Conduct
- Share forward advice before formal decisions are made on complaints
- Offer VIP (very informal but vital) guidance to both the Council leadership and Councillors on ethical or governance-related concerns
- Contribute to raising awareness on Best Practice in governance within Peterborough
What We Are Looking For
We seek individuals with:
- Absolute neutrality—no personal connections, affiliations, or conflicts of interest with Peterborough City Council or its members
- Strong ethical judgement and unquestionable integrity
- A passion for governance, ethics, or democratic accountability
- Analytical skills to assess information critically and then deliver clear, justified recommendations in writing

Eligibility
Applicants must not have any of the following associations:
- A Councillor on Peterborough City Council or another council
- A council officer or senior leadership role in local government
- An immediate family member or
- Any personal/financial/business connection (direct or indirect) to the Council
