About The Job

Salary: £75 per meeting

Hours per week: Casual

Contract type: Casual

An Independent Remuneration Panel (IRP) Member is a volunteer role that reviews and recommends the level of allowances and expenses paid to elected local councillors. They ensure the scheme is fair, transparent, and evidence-based, acting as a crucial, independent body that local authorities are legally required to consult under the Local Authorities (Members' Allowances) (England) Regulations 2003.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review Allowances: Analyze and recommend changes to the basic allowances and Special Responsibility Allowances (SRAs) for councillors.
  • Evidence Collection: Hear evidence from councillors, senior officers, and stakeholders to assess the time commitment and responsibilities of roles.
  • Benchmarking: Compare allowance schemes against other local authorities.
  • Report Generation: Produce formal reports to the Council with recommendations on the remuneration structure.

Please note this role does not attract sponsorship.

About You

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Independence: No affiliation with the local council, such as being a member or employee, or related to a member or employee.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze data and make objective, evidence-based decisions.
  • Local Knowledge: A keen interest in local government and the role of council members.
  • Integrity: High standards of public life and impartiality.

Time Commitment and Terms

  • Term: Generally, a 3- to 4-year term, sometimes renewable.
  • Workload: Typically involves meetings every 6 weeks over a period, or roughly 4-5 times per year, with additional reading.
  • Remuneration: £75 per meeting with travel expenses reimbursed.
