Industry Associate for the NIHR RSS Birmingham and Partners Hub

Position Details

Apply to: Applied Health Sciences, School of Health Sciences Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK Salary: Full-time starting salary range: £36,636 to £46,049 Potential progression upon appointment to £48,822 Grade: 7 Contract: Full-time, fixed term (up to September 2028) Closing date: 7th July 2026

Travel in the UK may be required prior to the end of the contract.

Background

The role supports the application under the NIHR Research Support Service (RSS), enhancing the interface between: ✔ Academic research ✔ Industry (especially SMEs in health & life sciences). The Birmingham and Partners Hub serves as a regional partner, facilitating industry engagement, policy insights, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Role Summary Speechify as the Industry Associate, you will:

  • Act as the primary bridge between research and businesses.
  • Identify & promote SME funding opportunities and industry-responsive research opportunities.
  • Provide Market Analysis, competitor/regulatory insights, and strategic foresight to bisearchers and stakeholders.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

Core Accountabilities

  • Query Management: Serve as the primary point of contact for industry-related project enquiries from RSS researchers.
  • Funding Opportunities: Map and promote funding programmes in medicines, health tech, and medical technology, targeting SMEs.

  • Market Intelligence:

    • Conduct research into competitive landscapes, industry gaps, and entry barriers.
    • Gather and synthesise evidence from regulators and stakeholders.
  • Researcher Support:

    • Translate briefs into actionable industry insights (e.g., market feasibility, evidence gap analysis) for funding applications.
    • Collaborate with methodologists to adopt appropriate terminology, frameworks, and tools.
  • Event Engagement:

    • Attend/represent RSS at conferences, networking events, and innovation forums, with reporting requirements for competitive trends and emerging trends.
  • Policy & Regulatory Tracking:

    • Monitor government policies, standards, and regulatory changes.
    • Proactively communicate findings to RSS staff.
  • Internal Communications:

    • Develop briefings, trend analyses and sector reports.
    • Enhance RSS website/social media with industry-specific insights.

Relationship Management

  • Liaise with regulators, agencies, and industry associations for project transparency.
  • Engage with external stakeholders for cross-sector collaboration.

Project Management

  • Provide high-level support, including:

    • Developing project plans & KPIs/milestones.
    • Overseeing progress reviews and effectiveness audits.
    • Presenting reviews to stakeholders/boards.
  • Administrative: Organise events, meetings, or dissemination activities as needed.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

  • Proven project management experience in research, industry, or life sciences.

  • In-depth understanding of:

    • UK health innovation funding structures
    • SME-specific support frameworks
    • Regulatory landscapes.
  • Communication & Analysis: Strong abilities to rapidly assess large volumes of data and distill insights into impactful reports/pitches for funding proposals.

  • Stakeholder Engagement skills: Deploy ** diplomatic, collaborative communication** across academia-industry lines.

  • Seniority: High level of independent judgement, responsibility, and professionalism.

Education & Experience

  • Degree-level qualification or equivalent professional experience in relevant field:

    • Health, life sciences, business analytics, or project management.
  • Literacy & Numeracy: Demonstrated capacity to analyse/reflect complex data and arrange writing/synthesis for diverse audiences.

  • Technical Proficiency:

    • Skilled in MS Office and website editing tools.
    • Proactiveness to learn emerging software/IT systems.
