About the Role
The University of Staffordshire is seeking a Technical Assistant to join our Science Technical Team in the Forensics discipline.
This is a practical, lab-based role with varied daily tasks. It’s not desk-bound—no two days are the same!
We are looking for someone who is hands-on, organised, and comfortable supporting both staff and students. If you enjoy working with equipment, troubleshooting, and learning new skills, this would be the perfect opportunity.
The role involves caring for teaching spaces, ensuring labs and resources are ready for use, and contributing to a well-functioning team environment.
What You’ll Do
As a Technical Assistant, your key responsibilities include:
- Setting up and packing away equipment, materials, and resources for practical sessions
- Assisting staff and students during teaching, labs, and demonstrations
- Troubleshooting simple technical issues (e.g., equipment faults, breakdowns)
- Maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and organisation of labs and teaching spaces
- Checking, organising, and inventorying equipment and supplies
- Ensuring teaching environments are space-ready each day
- Collaborating with colleagues to smooth daily operations

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
